The problem is weight and balance, stiction caused by variations of floor surface conditions.

Another solution might be balancing distances from side to side with range finders, but this is limited to special spaces.

OTOH, remote control could make this useful, but still rotating the wheels saves $'s not buying expensive mecanum wheels.
