PING Sensor

Our PING)))™ ultrasonic sensor provides an easy method of distance measurement. This sensor is perfect for any number of applications that require you to perform measurements between moving or stationary objects. Interfacing to a microcontroller is a snap. Source: Parallax.com

An Ultrasonic sensor is a device that can measure the distance to an object by using sound waves. It measures distance by sending out a sound wave at a specific frequency and listening for that sound wave to bounce back.

Extra ideas for math classes

Have the students figure out the speed of the chip, the speed of the sensor, the round-trip time of flight from the UltraSonic to the target. They already know the distance from the sensor to the target as a reference. Looking up data sheets online and digging out the info and doing the math makes for a middle-school level of research (reverse enginnering.)

Then have them alter their programs to use constants for the sensor.
